What happened after the letter was received.? Did his father even know?

Of course Hunter was hired, in part, because of his possible networking connections because he was the son of the Vice President of the USA. That alone might get your correspondence put near the top of the pile to be read, though it doesn't mean it would be acted upon. Kind of like saying if you use my name, you will probably get an interview/meeting, but you are the one that has to convince whoever you are worthy of what you are asking for.
