The Pacific has many qualities that can produce deadly typhoons/hurricanes, especially when they travel in the strange arc type patterns where they build up energy.

I've talk to one friend down there who was not affected at all and is way out of the path of the hurricane. I know people who live or are from areas like Manila who still were hit hard.
