Lived in the area during my college years (all 7 of them, I really liked college) and met a lot of good local people.

But Eureka? We called it "Eurethra." Something to do with polluted air from the nearby pulp mills (rumor had it the suburb of Fairhaven had the highest rate of lung cancer, and it wasn't from smokin the mean green), a serious heroin epidemic, teen runaways and/or disappearances, a horribly depressed local economy (they ran out of old growth, but blamed it on tree huggers), and of course the cliche of corrupt good ol' boy cops of the "pink house." We're talking Redneck Central, and not the good kind of redneck, but the kind that are stockpiling weapons and marching with the KKK (said to be quite a presence just a bit further north in Del Norte). Eureka has also been called "Oklahoma by the Sea."

Good to hear the ACLU is getting involved, but I think the chance of them changing the culture up there is about the same as the chance of Clarence Thomas getting recalled for cheating on his taxes and supporting Republican/conservative groups.
