Shang Zhou of the Shang Dynasty and Shi Huangdi of the Qin Dynasty.

The KMT did the same thing. Mao did it to Liu Shaoqi in 1968. Old habits die hard in China, because they are till mired in tradition.

Even my wife says after a rebellion is successful, the new rulers need to kill the old rulers and anyone that could challenge the rule because people need to honor and respect those in charge. It's simply called Confucian philosophy of the establishment of relationships:

Young to Old, Wife to Husband, Children to Parents, Ruled to Ruler.

Four of the five relationships of Confucius are based on the former being subservient to the latter. The other being the equal Friend to Friend.

The CCP is just following that idea and using the Qin Dynasty system of authoritarian legalism to it's most extreme conclusion.

Sadly, the people here accept it by in large. The "dissident" community is mostly ignored.
