(19,564 posts)Really. I'm not just saying that. Too many people there who support Democratic ideologies feel beat down and insignificant. There are a lot of Libertarians who don't bother to vote very often either, but they're not my concern. Heck, they're probably Tea Party members now and voting in line with the Republicans for all I know. It really wouldn't surprise me since most of them weren't the brightest crayons in the box.
Back in 2010 I worked the Gubernatorial election for White there. I can't tell you the number of people I talked to who told me they hadn't bothered to vote since Ann Richards lost. Which was 16 years before that! Don't get me started on the percentage of registered voters, either. I could go on all night!
The end line is the Democrats in Texas are some of the kindest and most devoted I've ever worked with anyplace. They've been underfunded and are trying to motivate a variation of apathetic and jaded people into becoming politically aware and active. Which is an uphill battle, but not an impossible one. All their major cities are predominantly Democratic now. That was a major turning point for Texas. It's the vast rural areas they currently have to register to vote and reach out to in the state. It's doable. Like eating any elephant, you do it one bite at a time. Eventually that beast is going to be down to a manageable size for you and your friends to conquer it.
Texas Democrats will always have a special place in my heart. They taught me about never giving up no matter what others say. Someday if you work extremely hard and believe, you'll win. Eventually.
