You're close, so close. These people are just hopeful.

Have you ever looked up the math behind the deals on this show called the Monty Haul problem? (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem)

This is just one of the many things a very smart entrepreneur can do to control an uneducated crowd. Then learn about the crowd you want to control - (see : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Authoritarian_Personality)

Then you use the power of behaviorism - (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._Watson) Which with the US is well honed by the extremely strong powers of corporations to promote a certain sense of "conformity" (my term - not exactly scientific - just for this specific use case). To be honest, this just manipulates the plasticity of the mind.

Himmler utilized this to a fairly successful degree. The use of symbology/iconography and a certain dull repetition was core to the normalization of ideas. Trump is actually a natural at this - though not sophisticated enough in use (thankfully).

What we have to do is set the norm to be one of a skeptic and one who thinks people are always selling something. To communicate and to accept diversity. To the authoritarian normalization is the anti-thesis of diversity. Diversity is the penicillin and bane of authoritarianism.
