I love the word you used: "release."
Letting him go was so hard for you but it eased his suffering, which thank goodness was brief. And even while he was in pain he must have felt reassured to be in your presence and care, knowing you would make the right decision, however difficult and sad it was for you. You took such loving care of him; he had a wonderful life with you. I'm so sorry for your loss, and for the shock you must still be feeling.
