Defense attorney Mike Degeurin, who exonerated Clarence Brandley, dead at 79 [View all]

Houston attorney Mike DeGeurin died late Friday at a Houston hospital following complications from a heart issue. He was 79.

He was born Jan. 9, 1945, in Austin and raised there. He moved to Houston to clerk for a judge and became a lawyer in 1972. DeGeurin was still working on cases up until his death, asking for updates while hospitalized, said his son, Michael DeGeurin.

“His superpower was that he made people feel comfortable,” his son said. “He didn’t have a mean bone in his body. That’s why he was so good with jurors and witnesses. He was genuinely himself.”
