My parent's home and my grandparents' homes were LGBT friendly, as is my own home.
I am, in some ways, a Hollywood kid. My parents met while working in the movie and television industry.
The difference between now and then is that when I was a kid LGBT was something one did not talk about to outsiders.
Most family and family friends today are open about their gender identity and sexual preferences and it's something almost unremarkable to my kids and their own peers. The shelter is still there for anyone who needs it, but mostly the secrecy is unnecessary. My kids have openly LGBT relatives and family friends who they've always known. When I was a kid all that was all hidden from the outside world. If two women were watching a movie and smooching on the sofa one didn't tell.
I met Gore Vidal in college and wrote about it, but my writing then wasn't anything I'd want to draw attention to...
The nice thing about writing today is I don't care what people think. But I still protect the lost child within me.
Here's a picture of Ramon Novarro my grandmother's sister took:
His story does not have a happy ending.
