In Idaho, the humidity is so low we don't have fleas here! When we were is San Diego back in the day my cats got fleas all the time and we started using the Advantage stuff, but after a couple of years he got a bone spur right where we put the stuff on him. WTF is up with that? Have you tried using cedar wood chips? It is a natural insect repellant and some around the house in small bags might help.
Good luck with the cats, we now have three at home with us.
