4. This morning

my senior citizen mother told me that she brought home paperwork for food stamps, but couldn't bring herself to fill them out. She's almost 80 and still works to supplement her SS; her 401k crashed.

She's got me, and my sons and their families, to make sure she's okay. We do our best to help her understand that helping goes all ways, and that families are always there for each other, just like she's always been there for us. Not everyone has that backup.

I, too, go into a panic every time a Republican congressman opens his mouth about Social Security or Medicare or whenever a Democrat heaps praise on the recommendations of the latest catfood commission.
