many Dems now register as Independents due to the Party's swing to the right, we never see any polls of registered Independents.

That is the largest voting bloc now in the country, the Independent registered voters. They are approx 40% while the Dem vote is approx 32% and Repub approx 29%.

No one can win with just party loyalists, they need to be able to attract voters across the political spectrum.
