Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright has died aged 65 from cancer.

Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason.

Dave Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.

Wright penned songs on classic albums including The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here.

22. Yeah, 2 revolutionary musicians
What a loss... It was Syd Barrett and Richard Wright who were primarily responsible for creating the otherworldly swirling sonic landscape that first surfaced on "Piper at the Gates of Dawn". Syd left music behind decades ago, but his legend shines on as bright as ever. Hopefully he's keeping good company with Rick right about now!

7. glad Pink Floyd had their Live 8 gig together
Richard Wright was a huge part of the group's dreamy soundscapes as the band evolved, and often didn't get much credit. Roger Waters went so far as to fire Wright from the band at the time of "The Wall" recordings, then brought him back as a salaried sideman for the tour; he was reinstated to the band after Waters departed, though part of his return may have been for legal reasons relating to use of the Pink Floyd name. The press around Live 8 was all about the Gilmour/Waters reconciliation; I wonder if, and hope that, Waters and Wright were able to make some peace with each other as well.

Rest in peace, Richard, and thanks for all the great music!

8. RIP Rick. You will be missed
Us, and them
And after all we're only ordinary men.
Me, and you.
God only knows it's noz what we would choose to do.
Forward he cried from the rear
and the front rank died.
And the general sat and the lines on the map
moved from side to side.
Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who.
Up and down.
But in the end it's only round and round.
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
The poster bearer cried.
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside.

"I mean, they're not gunna kill ya, so if you give 'em a quick short,
sharp, shock, they won't do it again. Dig it? I mean he get off
lightly, 'cos I would've given him a thrashing - I only hit him once!
It was only a difference of opinion, but really...I mean good manners
don't cost nothing do they, eh?"

Down and out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about.
With, without.
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?
Out of the way, it's a busy day
I've got things on my mind.
For the want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died.

14. Terrible news. Wright was so key to their best music...
...and a vital member, from their Syd days on. Initially, Syd, then later, Roger and David, were more front-and-center in their public image, perhaps, but to my mind the band was always the equal combination of superb talents. Wright, Mason, Barrett, Waters, Gilmour. Time to listen to "Sysyphus 1-4" again, this time through tear-filled ear-ducts.

Pink Floyd and the Doors were always my favorites because of the calm transcendental feel they had - Morrisons voice and pink floyds everying.

Rip Rick.

29. He's singing this

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks and no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

Cloudless is the day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one soothe me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

I'm glad he got to do that DVD with Gilmour at the Albert Hall before he passed. They did Echoes in its entirety, and it's just as awesome now as it was then.

32. God speed, Richard, and thanks
I learned a lot about textural Hammond playing from his playing, and he's often thought of on the gig.

Richard was a pure "taste" player, not the least bit flashy. I was just listening to some of his playing today...damn. :(

Dammit, I'm tired of losing my heroes!

It's a sad day for music, for sure.

36. Pink Floyd's Gilmour mourns bandmate Wright (AFP)
...

Gilmour praised his bandmate's "vitality, spark and humour".

"No-one can replace Richard Wright -- he was my musical partner and my friend," he said. "In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten.

"He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound."

And he added: "Like Rick, I don't find it easy to express my feelings in words, but I loved him and will miss him enormously. I have never played with anyone quite like him."
