Oklahoma judge accused of masturbating (during trials) resigns

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Reuters) - An Oklahoma judge facing removal over charges that he masturbated and used a device for enhancing erections under his robes during trials said on Wednesday he would retire from the bench.

Creek County District Judge Donald Thompson, 57, wrote to Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry resigning effective Sept. 1, a move that will allow him to retire with a full pension.

A former state representative and a judge for 22 years, Thompson was accused by state Attorney General Drew Edmondson of using a "penis pump" to enhance erections during trials and exposing himself to a court reporter several times while masturbating on the bench. .snip.

judges, lawyers, and other professionals with such kindness. The only way he should get a pension at all is if he is charged with dereliction of duty, contempt of court, making a mockery of the judicial system and whatever else they can come up with. The sentence for those things would be forfeiture of At LEAST half of his pension payments each month plus whatever jail time they can give him. What about the hundreds of cases who didn't get a fair shake (no pun intended ;) )because of his diddling around? From what I understand if a cop messes up just before he is to retire, he is in danger of losing his entire pension. Maybe that is only on NYPD Blue but still, why is it that congressmen and judges should be held above other people. And in addition to that why do judges have the power they have? For instance, if a judge doesn't agree with the jury's verdict he can exercise his right to overturn the verdict in certain cases in some states, so I understand. Even a lawyer can't really present his argument about a judge's call without being in danger of contempt. What kind of a deal is that? Important evidence is withheld at the judges discretion. Getting to the truth isn't the point, it is who has the lawyer who knows all of the loopholes around the law. This can't be the way it was meant to be. A jury of your peers means what for instance? Who are my peers? Disabled former Marines who worked for Social Services? Or mothers of three? Or people from Small Town USA?
