I've had it with these high gas prices |
|
after I pumped my "gold" tonight, I went in and slammed my money on the counter and told the attendent, "we need a new President." Yes, there was horrid shock on her face and I'm sure the cameras picked up my little temper tantrum, but as I left it felt so good to chime in with "I'll remember this in Novemeber."
What the hell is going on? Everytime I go to the pump it's up AGAIN. Who do we complain to...this is ridiculous.

Maybe you should try it once in a while, or even bicycling. It works wonders.

5. Bandar is a misdirection |
|
so Americans have someone to blame.
It is not SA that is causing the rise in prices, and they won't be the ones to lower them in October.

31. 1984 (The Election; Not the Book) |
|
Was living on the north side of Indy. But still registered to vote in my hometown a couple hours south of Indy.
Shortly before the election pump prices -- a major criticism of the Carter administration -- dropped about 10 cents a gallon. Drove down to my hometown to vote. On my way back reached the southside of Indy one minute after the closing of polls. Saw someone out front changing prices at the first gas station I passed. Saw someone doing the same at the second and third gas station. By the time I reached the north side of town every gas station I passed, without a single exception, had either raised prices around 15 cents a gallon since that morning, or had someone out front changing the signs as I drove by.
And they literally did this at one minute past the closing of the polls. But if you weren't driving through town at that exact time as I was then I guess you wouldn't have seen that.

2. This is what the whole Woodward book was about.. |
|
Bush is letting the nation know that HE controls gas prices...it's his way of keeping the peasants in check.
No one cares about Bandar or any of this other crap, they care about CHEAP GAS.
That's why I KNOW Woodward is full of shit and in on it with the Bush's.

8. My feeling has been that |
|
Cheney has been fighting the release of his conversations because he and his Enronish cronies were discussing doing to the US what they had just gotten through doing to California: screw job DE-lux. But I live out in west Texas--oil country more or less--and I was in the coffee shop the other afternoon listening to common folks lambasting Bush. One old curmudgeon, who doesn't often speak, put in this little tidbit: he says Cheney and the Enronish were talking about carving up Iraq--Shell gets this field--Exxon that. Now I'm not sure what I think--either way, you and I get to foot the bill. Sux out loud!

14. This may be a heretical thing to say in America |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 10:21 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
but if you're upset about high gas prices, look for ways to drive less. This may be difficult in a rural area, but if you're not in a rural area, look for ways to walk, cycle, or take public transit whenever possible. Use the car only if there is no other way. Buy the most fuel efficient car possible, and no bs about how you "need" an SUV unless you actually go off-road regularly.
The advantages: less money in the pockets of the Bushes and their oil company buddies, good for the environment, you get more exercise.
The oil companies get away with charging what they do because Americans are too addicted to driving. I realize that in many communities are set up exclusively for driving, but many are not. Even in Portland, where the public transit is excellent, I used to stand at my bus stop and see single-occupant cars, many of them SUVs, rolling downtown.
Don't let laziness or snobbery ("I don't want to ride the bus with all those poor people") keep you a slave to the oil companies.
Personally, I think our gas prices are too low, especially by international standards. We have no incentive to conserve.

19. As much as I agree with you, you have to keep in mind |
|
that many places don't have much or any public transportation. We only recently got city buses, and they run a bare-minimum route, and the city is considering shutting them down.
I wouldn't ride a bike in this town. Too many bad drivers and people on bikes in accidents, and I wouldn't put my kids on one with me. My point is that in some places, it really is difficult to make other arrangements.
I really don't care about what I pay at the pump. I'm more concerned about the overall inflation that will result. I agree wholeheartedly with your last line.

|
Alas, I guess its a lot easier to "kick their ass and take their gas."
What average Americans don't realize is that they will be walking, biking and using public transportation much sooner than they can imagine.

...habits. The reason people in other countries drive less is because it's EXPENSIVE!!! People would actually economize their time in the car better, plan errands etc. In fact, a gas tax is one tax I can always love.

Yes, I sure do remember the first time gas went over $1 in the early '70's. We were on a cross-country road trip out west. Sure ate up the vacation budget!

As someone who worked on the other side of the counter for around 10 years, I want to kindly suggest that we don't take it out on them. We stand there for 8 or 10 or 12 hours in a day, and when gas prices spike like they have recently, every third person unleashes their frustrations on us, as though we, personally, have something to do with it. I know that's not what you were doing or what you were thinking, but when you've dealt with it all day several days or weeks in a row, it can become trying to say the least.
Convenience store attendants don't make squat and have to pay the same price everyone else does. Most attendants at these stores are quite receptive to a kind word or some sort of "we're in this thing together" line of thought. It gets very lonely back there. It's even possible to get someone politically stirred up by making them briefly feel like you "get it" and want to help their lives get better as well ... and wouldn't it be great if we both voted to get this Bush person out of office...
I understand your frustration. Sorry if this sounds preachy.

Shrub will be fired, then I'm happy to do it. Raise them again.
Besides, we're still paying alot lower than almost everyone else, and definitely lower than inflation-adjusted prices.
But i don't blame you for ranting about your budget getting screwed by this. It's no fun.

33. Complain to anyone who demanded a tax cut. |
|
When you have a record budget and trade deficit, the dollar is going to plummet. When the dollar plummets, inflation results.
Gas prices are high due to inflation, not short supply.
