Flame me if you must, but I think Drew Carrey is a decent selection for Gameshow Host |
|
Don't like his politics? Fine but it's a gameshow not a talkshow. Discussion usually involves spinning wheels, plinko chips, and which price is closest to the ARP without going over.
Isn't funny enough? Who cares? Was Bob funny? His job is to be polite and somewhat cheerful. I think Carrey can handle this.
Also, nobody who has amything close to the Barker cult of personality is going to drop everything for a gameshow. Would George Cluney make a popular host? Hell yeah, but he has better things to do.

1. The good news is, it means Drew's career is over. |
|
He is now truly and officially irrelevant as far as Hollywood or any part of the entertainment industry is concerned.

And I'm SURE he's really broken up about that. He's got the one thing every entertainer dreams of, a steady gig. If he's smart he'll do this for rest of his life and raker in the bucks. You go Drew. :toast:

People care and would actually flame you on who is a good game show host? Is there something wrong with Carey? People worship Barker? My god, I'm glad I don't watch TV.

I think that's the crux of the issue here. some are conflating gameshow host with talkshow host, a field where being funny, smart, etc really matters

22. Rush Limbaugh once cameo'ed on The Drew Carey Show |
|
Not that that's a make-it-or-break-it moment, but I don't recall Al Franken making an appearance.
Sure, Penn and Teller showed up, but they're hardly Liberals, so they're no counter-balance to Rush.

He seems to have articulated the sort of lazy Libertarianism that in the past has defaulted to Conservatism, but he doesn't seem to bear the particular bigotries of the modern Conservatism.

he did a terrible job on "Who's line is it anyway".... I loved the real version from England, and when drew started the American version, he just killed it. :puke: He is NOT funny.

12. He was piss-poor as host of Whose Line Is It Anyway (the US version) |
|
he was constantly bringing the momentum of the show to a grinding halt with his inept improvisational skillz.
i'm kind of surprised that TPIR went with someone who already has an established name...seems like some mighty big shoes to fill.

When Bob Barker announced his retirement, one of my first thoughts was that a new face would be most appropriate - someone who can be associated only with TPIR.

14. Don't like his politics. Didn't see his sitcom until it was running daily on cable |
|
So I got to see it (treadmill) in a continual basis, got to see development in the characters, and the overall impression was of a good natured, long suffering, basically decent dude. Didn't like the "specialty" segments, where the cast had to stop and do improvised lines. Craig FERGUSON was absolutely great!!1
So. I'm saying the same thing about CAREY that I said about Rosie: The game show seems to be a boxing-in of their talent. They are both too creative, with MORE to say, than what the game format allows. It is LIMITING on them.

It has nothing to do with his politics and everything to do with his personality.
His sense of humor is sarcastic and occasionally mean-spirited. I don't believe he has the charm, charisma, warmth, or friendliness required for this show.

20. I agree about the sarcasm |

But my take on Bob Barker was that he was a patronizing old git. There was a whole disingenuous air about Barker. Plus he was rather sexist and IIRC had settled out of court for sexual harassment of one of his "beauties".

28. My first reaction, too. Kind of like Jay Leno - "mean spirited" |
|
I think an essential quality of that (kind of) show is its innocence, gentleness, and kindness. There has to be humor, but not "mean spirited" as we see with Leno.
Carson was compassionate, Barker was compassionate, but these new guys aren't.

|
...or if the Cult of Bob will do it in?
Frankly, I never understood why people were so apeshit over Bob Barker. Maybe it was all the sexual harassment/unlawful dismissal suits filed against him by his Beauties.
And also, what made Whose Line Is It Anyway (U.S. version) so bad were all the constant sexual entendres/references in the skits. It just got boring.
