Why do people feel the need to do this? |
|
I was taking my walk today after dinner (I've been working on loosing weight for the past month or so, and be doing a decent job of it), when suddenly this guy leans way out of his pickup while driving by and yells "Whooooo baby!" He had to have been at least 20 years older than me.
I didn't know if he was making fun or me, or what, but it certainly put me in a bad mood.

My pet peeve is 'friends' or acquaitances who feel the need to honk their horn or slow down or something when they see me on my bike. I try to explain to the idiots that a horn means only one thing 'FU, get the fu$% out of my way!!' And they're like 'but I only tapped on it - twice'. My thinking is that if I flash my middle finger at you twice really fast that does not translate into hello. To me, it's more like 'FU twice!'
I think people just do not know how to relate to each other.

 Either that, or I would have run up to his truck and tried to open the door while screaming at people that weren't there...I just love to fuck with people like that, you know, and make them think twice before doing something like that again.
I think people are WAY too opinionated these days. Sometimes, a person just needs to keep their damn mouth shut. Some people have a difficult time doing that, though.

Because people are all ASSHOLES.

12. When I walked a lot in the city, it used to piss me off. |
|
One evening, after some jerk yelled what he thought was a charming offer, I stopped, spun to face him and in my best pissed off mother voice asked: "Does that crappy behavior actually get you anywhere? Didn't think so."
One man actually pulled his vehicle into a driveway indentation for a car lot, the driveway blocked by dozens of cars, but he effectively blocked me from walking down the sidewalk. He was pissed cuz I ignored his calls of 'how much'. He slammed his door and started toward me yelling: "I SAID 'HOW MUCH?' you bitch!"
I was 40, no makeup on, hair not done, wearing not tight pants and a 'big shirt over a tank top. PISSED ME OFF and I started screaming for the sales guys at the car lot.
After that, I got a gun and some lessons. I refuse to let jerks and misogynists limit my life.

I'm a man. That means by default I'm a sexist pig. I admit it wholeheartedly. It's simply the nature of ALL men, whether they admit it or not.
To ANY man, a woman walking down the street is reason enough for celebration. We WILL look.

And I doubt this is true: "To ANY man, a woman walking down the street is reason enough for celebration. We WILL look."
And I don't think looking is sexist. I think they idea that a woman is losing weight so men will hit on her on the street is sexist though, and stupid. Looking is different from catcalling and yelling. Somehow, some men seem able to see an attractive woman without doing that.

It is not always about other people. It is not always about hoping someone finds you sexy. Sometimes it is about health, or being able to do what you would like (like go hiking), or being comfortable in an outfit, it is NOT always about other people.

Note that
1) It usually happens with men or boys in groups, sometimes a car full of them.
2) It never happens when the woman is in the company of a man.
3) It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like.
I was once standing on a corner in the middle of the afternoon waiting for a bus with two other women. Of the three of us, I was the youngest at 50, and the other two were ten to twenty years older. There was nothing unusual about the way we were dressed.
But along comes a car full of boneheads, and the ones on the passenger side lean out and say things like, "Ooh, baby, baby, give me some of that loving" and "You'd love the taste of my dick."
Since all of us had encountered this kind of idiocy way too many times in our lives, we just ignored them.
The object of the game is to get a reaction from the woman, preferably one of annoyance or embarrassment or fear. They all try, and the one who gets a reaction gains prestige in the eyes of his knuckle-dragging peers.

36. i am sure that some one will say i am over reacting but i think all forms of street harrassment |
|
is meant to limit womens public space and make us afraid of being public.
public space has typically been the domain of men, and this sort of aggravation served so make us afraid of the outside
i find public harassment to be proportional to the amount of sexism in the culture (for instance in India, public harassment of women is much worse than in America, and its much worse in America than in the Netherlands)

|
A lot of the troglodytes I see indulging in that kind of behavior don't seem to have the cognitive capability to put a thought that complex together. On a broader social level, that may be the case, but individually, I think its more a case of them following a well-worn tradition they have no real understanding of.
And I suppose I've answered my own question - they can't think far enough ahead to anticipate any kind of result.

BTW, he's a jerk, sorry someone of my gender was an ass. :(
Let's say a distinguished gentleman in a Jaguar with a suit, a Brosnan hairdo, and an impeccable accent pulled beside you and said "Pardon me, miss, but I just had to let you know that this gentleman thinks you are beautiful. Have a wonderful day." and drove slowly away, would it be better?
Not saying it would be. I'm just curious what people think.

Sounds like someone who spends too much time watching romantic comedies. Real life is rarely like that. If that distinguished gentleman made that remark in the office he'd be setting himself up for a sexual harassment charge if "beautiful" was a subordinate or peer. Saying it to a stranger on the street doesn't have that risk attached.
Never had it happen with a distinguished looking man in an expensive car but I suppose it's possible. Plenty of well heeled frat boy types driving expensive cars engage in the "WOO HOO" yelling as they roar by however.
