In Ford's case, I'm guessing their deadlines slipped because they were caught with their pants down, and weren't really prepared to deliver a hybrid anything.
Honda and Toyota have been systematically developing this capability, and now I bet it will be relatively easy for them to roll out any hybrid model they choose to.
Reminds me of that pithy quote form Rising Son: "Once again, we find ourselves playing that most American of games -- catch-up."
