The first one-to-one debate between Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama in their battle for the Democratic presidential nomination took place in Hollywood, California on Jan. 31. It was also the last such debate before the Super Tuesday when over 20 states will stage their nomination contests.
The event was billed as a classical duel between two heavy weight boxers because the two senators not only appear now to be the frontrunners of their party, but also their qualifications will most likely make one of them the next president of the United States.
During the two-hour debate, although the two presidential hopefuls engaged in short and sharp arguments on such issues as control over illegal immigrants, medical insurance and withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, they managed not to expand their differences into a sharp-tongued battle, demonstrating that both looked "presidential."
The Associated Press pointed out that the real winner emerging from this debate, marked by smiles and use of nice language, was neither Sen. Clinton nor Sen. Obama but the Democratic Party.http://www.chinapost.com.tw/commentary/2008/02/04/141867/U.S.-sets.htmThe world is watching!
