Allen's Coffee Brandy Appreciation Thread

Allen's has top sales but mixed reputation

http://www.bangordailynews.com/news/t/news.aspx?articleid=145492&zoneid=500

For some Mainers it is the syrupy, smooth coffee taste they enjoy with each sip. For others, it is the value they get from its competitive price.

Regardless of why they drink it, Maine residents undeniably have a favorite choice when it comes to brands of hard alcohol: Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy.

The product is far and away the most popular of all brands of hard liquor sold in Maine, according to statistics compiled by the state Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations. More than 990,000 bottles of the booze were sold in Maine in 2005, while Orloff Vodka, the state’s second-highest-selling brand, sold just fewer than 314,000 bottles, or less than one-third of Allen’s total, the statistics indicate.

Allen’s coffee brandy also far outclassed those next in line in terms of revenue, grossing $11.6 million in Maine for 2005. That same year, Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum and Bacardi Light, ranked second and third in Maine for dollar sales, grossed $4.3 million and $4.1 million, respectively.

<more>

edit: when I want to tie on a good "stabbin' drunk" I gets me a jug of Allen's and a gallon of Oakhurst - and hide all the sharp implements in the house...

:sarcasm:

1. "The champagne of Maine"!
So true. I was amazed when I first left Maine how few people even drank coffee brandy! Back home in Oxford county it was half the liqueur isle at the Lake Store!

God, between that and Moxie I love this state!

10. So that's why I can't find it!
I've looked for Allen's in Iowa, West Virginia, and here in Tennessee to no avail.

Yet another challenge to those of us "living in exile"!

11. yep, you can't even have someone ship it to you either.
try to make your own....

Coffee Brandy
1-1/2 cups of instant Sanka (or other instant coffee if you want caffeine)
3 cups boiling water
6 cups sugar
1 vanilla bean
1 bottle vodka (750 ml)
The cheap no-name brands are the best for this!

Mix the instant Sanka and water in a large heavy pot. Let the coffee dissolve. Next, add the vanilla bean and sugar and cook over low heat, stirring constantly. Stir with a wooden spoon only. Keep stirring until the mixture has a syrup consistency. Remove the pot from the stove and let cool. Add the vodka. You will need a large glass container with cover or earthenware jug to pour this into. You can pour some of it back into the empty vodka bottle. This recipe
makes 2 quarts. You need to let this liqueur sit for at least 30 days before drinking! This recipe is very good and tastes much like the expensive brands you buy in the store! Great for gift giving (or your own cupboard for special occasions
