:hi:
I'm sorry I can't help you, I have a tiny place myself and no room to rent, but I can suggest some ideas if you're new to the area.
There are some places where rent is more affordable and unfortunately they are further out. You could probably share rent on an apartment with someone in Woodbridge or Stafford cheaper than in Alexandria, for instance. But I think your best bet is in Maryland. Waldorf or Damascus, for instance are pretty far out, but perhaps the more reasonable areas to live. Look on the web for local newspapers to see local listings, for instance, the Potomac News will have more listings for Woodbridge or Manassas than the Washington Post will, and you'll have to Google some of the other area local newspapers to find rooms to rent. Get the City Paper as well as the Post. Even sometimes the Capitol Hill newspapers show rooms to rent. I know this isn't much, but I wish you luck! This is a difficult place to find an affordable place to live.

I wish I could help you, but I'm on the verge of getting kicked out of the Democratic White House myself. The gas is shut off, the landlord is in the habit of dropping by randomly and things are all fucked up.
However, I think that if things go my way, in about six weeks I'll have things worked out well enough to be able to entertain a couch refugee. If things don't work out for you by then, drop me a line and we'll talk.
I do have a wet and truly frightening basement in which you could put some stuff up for as long as you want--assuming I don't get kicked out in a couple of weeks myself. With the cold and rainy fall approaching, you won't want to keep it there more than a couple of months, or it will turn into mold.
Good luck. There are lots of good people here at DU and if someone can help you, they will.
