Detroit Latinos celebrate Sotomayor's confirmation
http://freep.com/article/20090806/NEWS15/90806083/Metro-Detroit-Latinos-celebrate-Sotomayor-s-confirmation

“When I opened up my homepage and saw the news, I just wanted to cry,” said Elena Herrada, of Detroit. “I’m so happy…my heart is overwhelmed. It makes a huge difference.”

To Herrada, Sotomayor’s rise to the top is an American success story.

“The fact that she’s a woman will also change the paradigm,” she said. “And she also comes from poor people, from people of color.”

“She represents the indomitable spirit of the American people,” Herrada added. “It’s about time.”

Referring to the debate over Sotomayor’s ethnicity and her views, Herrada said:

“What’s considered to be objective is a white male who is wealthy,” she said. “But that is not the majority of this country. Sotomayor’s history is one that reflects the history of so many people who have sacrificed their lives to make this country what it is. She represents the American people in ways that we never had before.”

2. I didn't think it would matter that much to me as it turned out to.

It wouldn't have mattered so much, I don't think, if the RWers hadn't pulled out all the racist attacks against her and our community in general. I was quite surprised to find myself shedding tears of happiness when she was confirmed today.
