Vanity Fair Article by Woolcut on Bush "Dressed To Kill" |
|
If you don't take VF, it's worth getting this issue just to laugh or sneer at this one. A few pieces.
"From that macho "Mission Accomplished" aircraft-carrier strut in 2003 to his recent "Plan for Victory" speech, at the US Naval Academy, George W Bush has used the military as no other modern president has done- for PR and partisan politics. His GI George performances would be scary, if they weren't so hollow....
Until Bush, modern presidents were prudent about trick-or-treating around in military rig. They respected the separation of the civilian and uniformed ranks, recognizing that militarizing politics and politicizing the military endanger the Republic; invite tyranny. The White House is meant to be a temporary residentce, not a dictator's palace. ...
It's patronizing to use the armed forces as stage props in a permanent campaign, particularly when they're sent into war with insufficient armor and the flag-draped coffins of their fallen comrades are considered unsuitable viewing. ...
If Bush no longer felt comfortable using military bases as theatrical soundstages for fear he wouldn't get a meaty serving of "hooah!" from the chorus, he'd have only Republican fundraisers where he'd be assured a friendly reception...
