Fleetwood Mac (together for the first time in 11 years) at Bill Clinton's inaugural ball, 1993.

I'm watching PBS's "American Experience" on Bill Clinton right now.

Goodness knows, I have a true love/hate relationship with Big Dog -- but in the end, he was the best president of my lifetime (JFK excluded; I was a bit young then, and JFK never had the chance to fulfill his promise).

The Clinton Era was a lot of things, not all of them good -- but it was the best presidential era of my life, and I fear I will never see such good times again.

So, if you're not watching "American Experience" right now, check your listings for a rerun on PBS.

Meanwhile... Enjoy the video (and see how many other familiar faces you can spot, especially as the end credits roll). This captures all the fired-up hope and determination I had nearly 20 years (!) ago -- and doubt I will ever feel again.

Man, it felt so good to be a Democrat.

Good times. Good times.

1. You and I agree on much, but we see him very differently.
Edited on Tue Feb-21-12 09:02 AM by No Elephants
I see his election as the beginning of the end of the Democratic Party as it was once known and the event that allowed the conservative wing of the Party to become the Party.

And the Lewinsky scandal as having paved the way for Dummya to run on "bringing honor back to the White House."

And so much more, including demanding that Congress get repeal of Glass Steagall on his desk ASAP.

ETA: And every time I see him (or Obama) grinning in the glow of the Bush Crime Family, I want to heave.

FWIW, a friend who was in kindergarten when Carter was President says Obama is the most liberal President of his lifetime. But, for better or worse, without Bubba, Obama could never have been what he is.

2. I hear you, and I don't disagree.
And I couldn't agree more with your last sentence (you can guess whether I think it was for better or for worse).

There are some things I'll never forgive Clinton for... but at the same time, I really miss those eight years of (relative) peace and boundless prosperity.

I think Clinton was about the best we could expect from the party establishment at that time. We could have done better -- much better -- but I believe the preceding 18 years, post-Nixon (am I counting right? Ford, Carter, Reagan, Reagan, Bush I), sent such a chill down the spines of the party's PTB, they never dared move more than an inch left of center again.

I have a long theory about this -- but I think you know by now how excruciatingly verbose I can be, so if you want to hear it, don't say I didn't warn you. LOL

3. As I see it, Clinton was not the candidate of the Democratic establishment of that time at all.
He was the candidate of a faction of the Democratic Party that ended up taking over the Democratic Party. And its ability to take over the Party so thoroughly at that time was in no small measure due to Bubba's success in getting elected.
