and were stuck in their cars for hours on end and did not want to go through that again. Good job Gov Goodhair! Heckuvajob in fact! :silly:

39. That was the direct result of evcuating areas that did not need evacuating. |
|
There are plenty of areas in Houston proper that are high enough to escape flooding, even this kind of flooding. They jumped the gun in Rita and made all those people leave (or they chose to, I am not sure which). They should have evacuated Galveston Island first and it should have been mandatory. They should have dragged those people out if need be and they should have done it starting on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.

40% seems awfully high. They are warning that nobody in Galveston in one- or two-story house will survive Ike.

31. About 60k I think. I lived there in '97 on the west end of the island just past Jamaica Beach in a |
|
subdivision. I could see the water from my living room. Nothing between the water and that subdivision. Lots of high end homes right on the beach across the street. Mostly vacation homes. Those homes will take a beating, for sure.

|
Just to see what it was like. With 40 per mile hour winds, the sand was burning my skin and I had to shield my face from the rain. That was all I needed to know that if we ever were int he path of an actual hurricane, I'd have my ass the hell out of town.

Based on the line, canon's splashing, and also on the cover of the album, it looks like he's wearing a world war I uniform.

Many of which do not have cars.
I used to live there, and am really concerned about how many people I knew are about to die while others shout "darwinism" about their demise without knowing a thing about that community.
Oh....and there is really only one bridge out of town.

30. Look, I'm not blaming those people, I'm blaming that city, that county, and the state of texas.... |
|
They've had a WHOLE WEEK to get out. It seems like the State of Texas let the Rita blunder get to them. In Florida we have LESS ROADS to get out on, but there's never a problem. They shut down any incoming traffic and turn the inbound lanes outbound.

36. Earlier I saw a heartbreaking photo in a slideshow of an |

older black man at the home of an 86 yr. old woman. He looked distressed and I wondered if there were no services available to evacuate them. Thanks for that bit of info.
I hope that your friends will be okay, but from what I've seen on the weather channel since 8 this morning, it's looking grim. I'll be lighting a candle soon and hoping for the best for those who are in the way of this monster, Ike.

the water level's practically up to the top of the seawall and waves are crashing over. Bolivar island to the NE is flooded; they pulled 72 people off of it who thought they still have time to leave.
And, it's not raining yet....

32. Just don't get it why someone would stay? |
|
As early as last night, when there was still a chance to get in the car and drive away, CNN and the Weather Channel were reporting that the National Weather Service said anyone who stayed would "face certain death," to which all of the reportes and the anchors kept repeating that they had NEVER heard such a dire warning before.
There must be people that DUers know that are staying.
I'm not judging, I'm very intellectually curious why someone would stay? Pride? Looting? Distrust of government?
Just don't get it???
