Sunday school, young minds |
|
My wife volunteers to be a Sunday school teacher (4th grade) at our church. This past Sunday, she was going to lead them in prayer and she asked if anybody had someone or something for them to specifically pray about. My son (god bless him) suggested that they pray about people who have lost their jobs, people that have lost their house, and people that are going hungry. Another girl suggested that they pray that "Obama becomes a Christian". Wow, talked about uninformed! It just bothers me! Obviously she's 'learned' this nugget from her parents. Do her parents truly believe that Obama isn't a Christian? Or is it that 'Obama isn't christian enough'? I'm suspecting the latter - and if that is the case, then who holds the standard to Christian living? Is it them? Hardly! What other misinformation has she been fed? How sad!
Side topic to this: how can religious leaders reconcile their beliefs with conservatism. Pro-guns, death penalty, everybody-for-themselves, me-first, war-mongering, pro-torture conservatism? That doesn't reconcile with the bible I grew up with. I'm not saying Democratic principles reconcile themselves 100% of the time with the bible either. How can religious institutions identify themselves with conservatism?

1. Even if some parts of the Bible dispute conservatism... |
|
...religion is conservative by nature. Having the revealed truth, it necessarily opposes charge or challenges to the power structure. The whole godly vs. everyone else is a religious staple not only for Christianity, but for all of them. And the bulk of the Bible supports that view.
