JOIN THE HUMMING BIRD WATCH. Live web cam of eggs about to hatch today or manaña in So Cal
http://phoebeallens.com/

Hummbird 2/25/10 Sunlit Egg!

How the Live Webcam Got Started
Living in Southern California, we are blessed to be joined by numerous species of birds and several years ago we noticed a hummingbird setting up her nest in our yard. What amazed us is we thought it would be a one-time event, but she kept coming back year after year. After several years, we thought it would be fun to get a closer look and set up our first webcam in 2007. As the number of viewers grew, in March 2009 we moved the broadcast to Ustream.tv, and then the number of viewers exploded. In less than a year, we had over 1 million views, and had climbed to the 2nd most popular birding site on the web. Phoebe has a dedicated community of followers from all around the world, and we love hearing that school children are learning about hummingbirds with the help of our webcam and that Phoebe has inspired visual artists, musicians, poets, and more.

Who is Phoebe?
Phoebe is a non-migratory Channel Islands Allen's Hummingbird (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen's_Hummingbird). She builds her nests in a rose bush, and the nest is about the size of a golf ball, with eggs being about the size of a tic-tac candy. The season for nesting is October through May/early June, and Phoebe will lay four to five clutches per season. One or two eggs are laid per clutch, they hatch after 17 days, and the chicks typically fly three to four weeks later. Phoebe will sometimes build a new nest, but frequently repairs old nests. For more information, please check out our Frequently Asked Questions (below).

13. Huitzilopochtli was an Aztec god of war

In Aztec mythology, Huitzilopochtli, also spelled Uitzilopochtli (Classical Nahuatl: Huitzilopōchtli "Hummingbird of the on the Left", or "Left-Handed Hummingbird", huitzilin being Nahuatl for hummingbird), was a god of war, a sun god, and the patron of the city of Tenochtitlan. He was also the national god of the Mexicas of Tenochtitlan.
The legend of Huitzilopochtli is recorded in the Mexicayotl Chronicle. His sister, Coyolxauhqui, tried to kill their mother because she became pregnant in a shameful way (by a ball of feathers). Her offspring, Huitzilopochtli, learned of this plan while still in the womb, and before it was put into action, sprang from his mother's womb fully grown and fully armed. He then killed his sister Coyolxauhqui and many of his 400 brothers. He tossed his sister's head into the sky, where it became the moon, so that his mother would be comforted in seeing her daughter in the sky every night. He threw his other brothers and sisters into the sky, where they became the stars

42. Wow, there are almost 3.000 people watching!
I've been watching off and on all afternoon. This has really been fascinating.

At one point, I saw what looked like a 3rd egg sitting in the front of the nest - in that part that we can't see because the nest wall is so high. We'll see if there's a 3rd baby or not!

I'm not a chat room participant, but thought some of you might like to read what they were saying about the lizard attack, and Phoebe removing one egg.

4:29 LaHapienda: hey wthr
4:29 aaainzurich: Breaking news for new arrivals: Phoebe removed an egg
4:29 Beebles: ty sparky hope you've got plenty to go around we may need to change em again
4:29 PrismCat: TY
4:29 slipps72-1: how did she remove the egg?
4:29 singer2010: Can someone please tell me where the lizad is!
4:29 jodoggy: It's very warm today in Irvine, 84 right now, so the egg won't get cold while she's off it, I dont think
4:29 leeniex: how did she remove it? beak?
4:29 donna931: no
4:30 ma2kittens: Okay I am back. I had stuff to do. And I mised all the stuff going on.
4:30 bdonna426: she is still buzzing around
4:30 mollyrotten: what happened to egg #1?
4:30 dragonflysock: looked that way, leeniex
4:30 on-the-real-1: hummingbirds are tough, they fight each other every 5 seconds lol
4:30 Michhumms: same here ma2 I turned my head one minute and the next it was over
4:30 manijehpdx: seriously, where did teh egg how? she pushe dit out of the nest??
4:30 blackbirdhlg-1: ty for weather info jo Hi ma2!!!
4:30 S76lewis: man phoebe removed the dud egg with her feet
4:30 Athlona-1: Lizards do not go away very easy, I hope she leave them along before night fall..
4:30 aaainzurich: Breaking news for new arrivals: Phoebe removed an egg with her beak
4:30 lolsuz: for those who just joined: a lizard was checking out the nest, Phoebe attacked him and ran him off, and then returned to take out egg 1, which was no good and probably attracted the lizard
4:30 WthrLady: better that she removed it if there was a predator around.
4:30 Bloody-Martyr: she picked egg up in her beak through the hole, must've been smelly
4:30 Beebles: phoebe's a phung phoo phighter
4:31 wedgie2: Phoebe pierced the egg with her beak - you could hear the shell
4:31 luvbird: it had legs
4:31 kingfisher80227: HB nest is size of half a walnut. Bad/dead egg removed by Phoebe when lizard came to nest. LIzard looked huge, but remember nest is very small and egg is the size of a larag tic-tac
4:31 harris_d: that still makes me very sad.
4:31 ddurnell: Everyone get over it, the egg is gone. Move on... concentrate on the other one.
4:31 luvbird: it was a lizard
4:31 Jebese: .me Just amazing! (clap)
4:31 skisacky: Poor Phoebe, I missed all the excitment
4:31 kelliest1969: sounds like maybe a skink? did it have any blue on it?
4:31 agentace79995: does this chat the the f into ph like this family
4:31 JanWink: It really was a huge lizard
4:31 blackbirdhlg-1: yes Beebles sooo right OMG what have I missed??
4:31 singer2010: last night phoebe was away for 20 minutes
4:31 housewolf: Book Face has hijacked Phoebe Cam site again
4:31 sandysays: Anyone wanna wager how many hits THAT few seconds of video would have on youtube?
4:32 WthrLady: LOL! She sounds so funny. I love listening to her wings flapping about. She sounds like an electric lawn mower.
4:32 sewcrazy: How funny is it that most of us yelled at the lizard to scare it away...like it could hear us.
4:32 Athlona-1: She is wonderfull mum...
4:32 S76lewis: i heard it in the bathroom
4:32 ma2kittens: Is Pungh hom
4:32 ddurnell: I'm with you! Doesn't that annoying crow need to eat a lizard about now!
4:32 LaHapienda: prob with your shorts, sandy?
4:32 Michhumms: I heard the collective yell in Michigan
4:32 on-the-real-1: the egg is about the size of a peanut right?
4:32 S76lewis: not anymore
4:32 Bloody-Martyr: it was as big as a house ---- it was big coz the cam is magnified and it was on the rose branch on the left, nearer to the cam
4:32 Catterpiggle: Hello everyone... what happened to Phoebe's egg??
4:32 S76lewis: lol
4:32 LaHapienda: a tic tac real
4:32 lolsuz: for those who just joined: a lizard was checking out the nest, Phoebe attacked him and ran him off, and then returned to take out egg 1, which was no good and probably attracted the lizard
4:32 JanWink: I knew it was coming because of the delay
4:33 aaainzurich: Breaking news for new arrivals: Phoebe removed an egg with her beak
4:33 Olios: tic tac mint real
4:33 Treysa: So what size is the egg?
4:33 kingfisher80227: I agree with Durnell, hopefull the egg in the nest is still viable. The egg is the size of a large tic tac, not as big as a peanut.
4:33 ellenny: I have a pic of that lizard ! Spent ages just signing up so I can tell ya ! I wanna post it .. but where ??
4:33 Jebese: /me Pretty girl!! (clap)
4:33 rmcadle: where is host?
4:33 S76lewis: gallery below
4:33 blackbirdhlg-1: yes ddurnell thats what we said before...and the thorns could not keep the lizard away...
4:33 skisacky: Yes, show the lizard
4:33 leeniex: photobucket
4:33 JanetMcD: is the egg in danger if she dosent sit on it soon?

4:37 joakiti: get a life omg
4:37 Treysa: You better believe this is life in action!!!!
4:37 ma2kittens: Beebles I have been told to get a life too

4:37 Jebese: /meI sure know how it feels to be helpless!!
4:37 JanetMcD: poor thing
4:37 hummmingbird: She lost an egg to a lizard? Wow.
4:37 ddurnell: It was definately a lizard, we saw it's legs. She is still in protection mode and not sitting on the other egg much, it's not looking good for egg 2 either
4:37 fizzmykitty: olios are we going to be able to see phoebe throw the egg out for those who missed?
4:37 Bloody-Martyr: from the left, on the branch near the camera which made it look like a dinosoar
4:38 eatabean: humm, the lizard did not take the egg, she got rid of it

4:38 blackbirdhlg-1: was Phoebe on the nest when that lizard came???
4:38 JanetMcD: yes humm
4:39 Treysa: you people who say 'get a life' don't have any appreciation for nature

4:39 aaainzurich: can someone paste in the lizard/egg update every now and again
4:39 Olios: no bb
4:39 JanWink: Alligator lizards are very slow. They don't move fast. I have a feeling it is still around
4:39 S76lewis: is this the same lizard as in Defending her nest" video?
4:39 mmp5: thanks Bloody-Martyr - I just missed it all by seconds... walked out of the room for a min... wow!

4:40 blackbirdhlg-1: wished she had targeted at that one with her beak...she is still so upset...
4:40 scruffyone: wildfire, we do know it was a reptile :)

87. the drama is riveting!
watching her sit on those eggs... lol.

I love the "smile" on the lizard's face when it looked toward the camera.

when I slowed down the vid to find places to take stills, I noticed she was attacking the lizard but was too fast to show with the capacity I had (from a youtube vid) to catch her.

but in the one after the lizard smile, the lizard turned itself upside down to get its head away from her attacks.

and when I tried to get more than one picture of her removing the egg, she moves so fast once she gets the egg in her beak that youtube can't parse things that slowly.

100. Were you able to get a screen shot of the lizard?
It's amazing how fast it all occurred. Lightening speed. I'm going to re-watch the attack because I don't remember the lizard turning itself upside down.

I'm worried that this last egg isn't viable, but I'll remain hopeful. As long as Phoebe nests it, then she must believe there's hope.

:hi:

103. yeah, when I was posting them
I had trouble seeing the lizard sometimes.

I was happy I could get a picture of the bird (in the top right of the frame) scaring off the lizard and then the lizard hanging upside down. exposing a less vulnerable part to wait for an opportunity.

nature is creeeeeepy. :)

I missed the action today, but saw a video that showed the lizard was waiting under the nest and Phoebe was gone a lot today.

97. If I thought the egg was going to hatch, I would be upset....
but I don't think it was viable. Lizard might as well have lunch since it won't be hatching. No different than me having eggs for breakfast at this point.

I hope that Phoebe has good eggs next time. Last time and this time were not good for her :-(

98. She is on the older side for a hummingbird
At least I saw that in the discussion on the site yesterday. Apparently she's been laying several broods a year for a number of years. I don't know a thing about hummingbirds other than they are lovely to observe so I'm working on hearsay

104. Phoebe has abandoned her nest.
Reading through the chat-log, she appeared a couple of times today, briefly, so at least she is fine.

The cam is still up and running, though.

105. Can't blame her for leaving.
On the day that she discarded egg #1 the amount of noise being generated around her nest was outrageous. Hummingbirds are fairly feisty but I could see her flinching every time a nearby door would slam (repeatedly) or when kids were screaming and hammers hammering...

Then there was also the host constantly readjusting the nest relative to the cam.

And the little "fund drive" that began on the lizard day made it seem like just another scam to me.

I know that she has successfully nested there on other occasions but I think this one was driven by the high exposure both on the video channel and Face book, and when it became obvious that they had a "hit" on their hands their consideration level dropped off. (she also lot her last clutch as well)

With over a million viewers, I wonder how much profit they made?
