For the 10th anniversary of DU - a memorial for those we have lost
Please keep it to those who passed away NOT tombstoned!

I'd like to start with Khephra - he was the 4th DUer I ever met and what a loveable, crazy guy. The guy was dedicated to getting all the top headlines posted here at DU everyday. One of my best memories of Kheph is from the Sept 2003 DU gathering in DC. When I woke up the next morning, he and Ramsey were watching a repeat of the Freeper rally on CSpan. When I walked into the room they both looked at me and did this 'LOSER' funny hand gesture. I had no clue what the hell they were doing until I looked at this TV and saw this crazy freeper about 2 minutes from his head bursting calling everyone a loser.

Post your DU memories of DUers we lost here please!

Andy was both an inspiration and a beacon to me. His tragic illness and devastating death still haunts me. He can't be replaced.

I need to dig out that baby pic of him, where he's getting a bath in the kitchen sink.
Andy was nothing short of adorable, and had a pure heart and sweetness that is truely rare to find.

101. Andy was one in a million.
I remember coming on here on that day in July 2005 (under a different alias), and reading that he was gone - there were no words, really. I'm still learning from the example he set, and it was a great one indeed. We lost him much too soon, but his spirit absolutely lives on through DU, and through all of us.

58. I think of Kendra just about every day. She was my first DU friendship that went offline.
I'm still finding things that she sent to me that somehow, over time, I had forgotten.
And I keep thinking about a movie I had wanted to recommend to her, because she was madly
in love with Gerard Butler. That movie was on TV again this week. I never got around to
telling her about it, and I will wonder forever if she ever saw it. She would have loved it.

The last time she and I 'talked' on the boards, she gave me one of these
so I'm giving her one here.

Geez, now I'm gonna go cry again. She'd hate that. LOL.

 Another good Texan gone. She went to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston for treatment. I reassured her that that is THE place to go for cancer treatment, from anywhere in the country. My sister worked for the Dr. who was the head of the Pathology Dept., Dr. Lukeman, and he was a world authority on lung cancer. She loved her job. Cancer got her unexpectedly, but she got the best of care there.

I'm sure Longhorn got the best of care too.

she did so much for nurturing a sense of community at DU.

I knew that she had some great health challenges.

I missed her passing, and have wished that her absence was due to her convalescence.

While this may be greatly belated - it is the first that I have known this - feel kicked in the gut. RIP NewYawker - I so greatly appreciated your nurturing of the community spirit that you gave to the community in the early DU years.

13. TLB
or Tangerine La Bamba, aka LeftyLawyer.

She was the first poster I interacted with and then had a running email conversation with her. She then disappeared for a couple months and we received the news. Being a writer, she gave me valuable information regarding the process of doing it professionally. Having had a career in the law and having gone to law school here in the Bay Area, we found lots to discuss over time. It was valuable to me to gain a friend through simple communication on a message board. Never met her in person but after having read so many of her writings, I feel I knew the best of her.

She may have rubbed some folks wrong sometimes, as she was extra feisty in her beliefs and had a very interesting and productive life. She never gave up the fight.

Had quite the avatars as well.

18. I believe it was 18 months ago or longer.
There were numerous threads, with her enemies chiming in on them, saying she was a loose cannon, didn't know anything, etc. She would dig her heels in on a point and not give up. A natural born lawyer.

I think the last few stories she shared here were about Woodstock on its 40th anniversary in 2009 (we disagreed about some of the concert, as she was not a Grateful Dead fan) and her recollections upon the death of Robert McNamara. And finally on the anniversary of JFK's assassination. She then kind of disappeared and a freind posted here that she passed and gave a link to her website.

Annette Appollo was her real name. Published even.

RIP TLB

25. And my tribute to him 7/5/2007
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 12:08 PM by w8liftinglady

We have lost 100 soldiers this month so far. This makes the third month in a row that the death toll has exceeded 100. In June, there were 299 soldiers wounded, unable to return to duty. In the meantime, we are oblivious to the suffering that our brave troops have to endure silently. There are many instances of soldiers and Marines being discouraged from seeking treatment for the horror they have witnessed. My good friend, Dale Peters, was instrumental in creating mental health resources for military with PTSD. Dale also founded the first shelter for homeless veterans in his state in Illinois. Dale died a few weeks ago. He was a veteran, a hero, and I loved him as my friend. In Dale’s memory, I invite you to consider a small donation to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. You can learn more about them at www.nchv.org . Until we acknowledge the trauma and suffering our troops are enduring through multiple deployments, poor equipment and poor planning, the number of homeless veterans will continue to grow. Help these heroes who need us. They were there for us.

One of my first DU connects per our on-line exchanges on LBN. He was also one of the first DUers I met at an Indy gathering. Keph, imo, influenced a "generation" (per online definitions of generations) of DU posters.

He is greatly missed.

Throughout my college years, I probably absorbed more news from Kephra's posts than any other source. His passing was a true tragedy. I still think about him and his contribution to my interest in current events.

43. Learned greatly belatedly of Kashka's passing.
RIP. Kashka was an exceptionally welcoming/embracing person - created a space to make posters feel welcomed, recognized and appreciated. Done at a time when the size of the community was growing so quickly that it was hard to feel connected to other Duers unless one had been here for a long time. Kashka greatly helped create a sense of community in the lounge... quite a feat!

90. She was an Election reform Forum person.
I remember a Op she started defending paper ballots, and how they were used in Scotland.

Then Scotland switched to electronic voting after her death. :(

But now I hear that Scotland is dumping them and going back to paper ballots. :)

She was very kind to me.

100. Thanks for sharing your memories. She was very kind to me, too.
And passionate about anything that she saw as a wrong, whether it was elections or her beloved cats. I think she became more mainstream DU during Katrina, when folks were forced to abandon their pets, and especially during the pet food recall. She always had the latest news about what had been recalled posted, worked incredibly hard to get the information out to the rest of us. We used to PM about animals and I know that she felt guilty after losing her cat at age 21. I ran it by my vet and even he said that 21 was an impressive age for a cat. *sigh* I still miss her, too. :hi:

104. Rob (Zodiak) passed January 5, 2010.
He and I were driving back to Columbus from spending Christmas in Texas. He had a heart attack in Joplin, MO. There wasn't anything that could be done. One of the nodes in his heart wouldn't catch a charge.

He was brilliant and the love of my life. I feel so lucky to have had him for the time I did.

Rob after receiving his PhD...
