ISHINOMAKI —
A high school in San Francisco donated 500 school bags and numerous items of stationery to elementary and junior high school students Monday in disaster-hit Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, at the start of the new academic year.
The coastal city, which has been devastated by the March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami, has forged amicable ties with San Francisco since it hosted several parents and students from Lick-Wilmerding High School who participated in the 2009 Japan-America Grassroots Summit in the prefecture.
At the presentation ceremony at the city office, Megumi Inoue, a 46-year-old Japanese American who had taken part in the summit with her daughter, said, ‘‘The school wanted to do something in Japan.’‘
