US religious right sees Senate compromise on judges as 'betrayal'

The US religious right, a key constituency of President George W. Bush, is furious at the Republican Party for failing to use its Senate majority to impose conservative judges in a showdown with opposition Democrats.

Some leading activists say they feel betrayed by the compromise reached by the two parties in a deal that averted a major Senate battle.

..........

Many members of the Christian right voted for Bush in last November's presidential election because of the promise of securing a more conservative judiciary, according to experts. And there was a fiery religious reaction to the Senate deal.

"This Senate agreement represents a complete bailout and betrayal by a cabal of Republicans and a great victory for united Democrats," said James Dobson, head of Focus On The Family, a right wing Christian activist group.

"We share the disappointment, outrage and sense of abandonment felt by millions of conservative Americans who helped put Republicans in power last November. I am certain that these voters will remember both Democrats and Republicans who betrayed their trust."
