King wins District 8 GOP primary

After a bitter campaign that sought to define conservatism in Northeast Florida, state Sen. Jim King soundly defeated challenger Randall Terry in the Republican primary.

With 86 percent of the vote counted at midnight, King had 66.5 percent of the vote across four counties.

The race pitted King, a social moderate and fiscal conservative, against Terry, a conservative religious activist who pushed the race to the right by campaigning on issues of gay adoption, abortion and medical malpractice.

"We know what we are, and we know what we aren't," King told supporters who gathered at the Fraternal Order of Police building in Jacksonville. He added later: "You may not always like my decisions or my votes, but I can promise you I will be thinking long and hard before I make them."

Terry did not return calls to his cell phone Tuesday night. His supporters met to watch election returns in a Regency Square office building.
