the law changed, so Bushco couldn't "gum it to death" for another 18 months. Faced with that reality, the next best opportunity for Griffin to destroy the nation would come with a Thompson victory, so Griffin opted to subvert democracy in the way most comfortable to him and sign on there.
It's not as if the permanent replacement will be a candidate above reproach. They'll just find another hack to finish the job. Sen. Pryor's problems with the Griffin appointment were personal, he'll be a good boy for BushCo again and play along now.
