US soldier killed in shooting from Iraqi mosque: military

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A US soldier was shot dead by insurgents in Iraq who attacked his patrol from a Sunni Muslim mosque, triggering retaliatory fire from US forces, the military said on Friday.


The soldier's unit came under small-arms fire on Thursday from the Sunni Mohammed al-Sharif mosque in Tarmiyah, a town just north of Baghdad, it said, adding that another soldier was wounded but had returned to duty.

"After confirming the source of the attack, CF (coalition forces) established an outer cordon of the area and attempted to locate the mosque's imam," the military said in a statement.

The troops identified two "armed individuals" on the mosque roof and then instructed the guard to call out all the inhabitants of the building, the military said.
