Care center repays kindness of dedicated employee

Carol Haynes said she loves to see the residents at Mountainside Residential Care Center smile, so she saves her change in a Mason jar until she has enough money to throw a party. Haynes, 61, of Fleischmanns, said she works six days a week. She washes dishes at the Margaretville nursing home and works a second shift cooking and cleaning at the Binnekill Square Restaurant.

Haynes said when she first went to work at Mountainside in 1997, she and two other employees would pool their money to buy chips to make Christmas cookies for the residents. Her two friends passed away, but she continued saving and sharing.

"Now I am the last of the three musketeers," Haynes said Thursday.

Haynes said three of the residents at the home were her former neighbors, so she began visiting them and decided she wanted to do something to brighten their lives. "I sometimes do little things, but I usually give pizza and hors d'oeuvres parties," she said. "That way, a whole bunch of people can benefit from the joy of it _ and the more the merrier."
