TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — NATO warplanes bombarded this city with more than 20 airstrikes early Tuesday, hitting near Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s residential compound in what appeared to be the heaviest night of bombing since the Western alliance began its air campaign.

The rapid string of strikes, all within 30 minutes, rattled windows and sent plumes of smoke wafting over the city. One column of smoke rose from an area close to Colonel Qaddafi’s compound, suggesting that it might have been a target.

NATO said in a statement that a number of the strikes had hit a vehicle storage building that had been used to supply Colonel Qaddafi’s forces who were “conducting attacks on civilians.” It was not clear if the storage site was the only target hit, but it was next door to the Qaddafi compound, which includes a number of military facilities and has been pounded repeatedly by NATO.
