Aker Kværner asked to drop Guantanamo contract

Amnesty International's Norwegian chapter wants compatriot company Aker Kværner to end its contract work at the US military base at Guantanamo Bay. The reason: Alleged abuse of human rights by US authorities holding prisoners at the base.

Aker Kvæner Public Sector Inc has had a contract for maintenance and logistical work at the base since 1993. The company's current contract expires in September, and Amnesty International doesn't want Aker Kværner to renew it.

"Aker Kværner should pull out," Amnesty's general secretary Petter Eide told newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, noting that the US military's treatment of prisoners held as terror suspects "has been criticized up to the prime minister's level in Norway."
