2. When they don't see the dems fighting for them
it will be government and politicians, in their mind.

While many here did not like Alan Grayson or Anthony Weiner, they kept the dems in the news, with a fighting stance. When a person's life is/has fallen apart, people are not looking for an Alan Colmes, they are looking for an Alan Grayson, someone who is fighting for them, and let's them know about it. It doesn't matter whether or not that politician succeeds or not, just the idea that there is some one in their corner is comforting.
