The question is how close the election is, and can the usual level of fraud really affect the outcome? In 2000, it clearly did - in Florida alone.

When it comes to the electronic voting machines, I don't really know what to expect. One of the disturbing elements is that the audit capacities of these systems are so weak that it doesn't even take a successful hack to discredit an election - it would be sufficient to make a credible claim of having carried out such a hack. The security of the systems is so primitive ( Microsoft Access? Please! ) that it could literally be impossible to determine whether or not a hack had taken place.
