1. I lived in Germany and Austria
for a number of years. What shocked me the most was that some of the people I met and found to be warm, kind, wonderful had not only supported the NAZI movement in the 1930s and 1940s but, mostly in Austria, still held on to some of the fundamental beliefs and embraced the hatred of Jews that they had followed when the NAZIs were in power. "Nice," normal acting people, people who will feed the hungry and rescue the sick can believe in and work for fascist ideologies. At the same time, some progressives can be obnoxious. So I learned that both fascists and progressive can be "nice," socially polished, polite, etc. There is not always a correlation between these personality traits and moral or social values.
