12. The problems come when we talk about solutions...
Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 09:02 PM by Solon
From a practical standpoint we cannot seal the borders, that's simply impossible. Short of putting up a 100 ft tall stone wall that's 3 ft thick, and who is going to pay for that? Even then a $20 pipe bomb will demolish a section easily enough, so that won't help. We need checkpoints, we need watchers, etc. but there are other solutions that are possible from a practical standpoint that will work. The first thing we should do is look at who the employers are that don't ask questions, and put them out of business, simple as that. Deporting the illegals is all fine and dandy, till they try again next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. Throwing them in jail for years is no solution either, for it is an unfair punishment on desperate people, plus we the taxpayers will pay for room and board.

No, solutions will not come easy, its easy enough to look at sound bites that look good, but they will not accomplish anything. Another thing that will help is this, instead of free trade agreements, which force poverty on already impoverished people, we can actually LEAVE their countries alone for once. Let them build up local economies that are sustainable and trade with us as partners rather than as slaves to corporations. This will give rise to a larger middle class in their countries, more stable governments, and therefore less illegal immigration into this country.
