'Course that isn't to say I voted for Bush or even that I voted at all. Besides, what is "voting" after all? The etymological origin of the word is a most interesting story. Its immediate origin in is the Middle English "vow" which descended, through French, from the Latin "vo:tum" which in turn was the past participle (neuter gender) of the verb "vove:re," which also meant "to vow." Ultimately of course, all these words descended from the Proto-Indo-European *wegh(w)h-, also *eugh(w)h- or suffixed o-grade form (past tense) as *wogh(w)h-eyo- which meant "to preach" or "to speak solemnly." Obviously, over the years, the literal meaning gave way to a more figurative or metaphorical meaning, giving rise to expressions like "your vote is your voice." Oh, yeah. Why didn't I vote for Kerry?
