14. Ultimately, picking them off is the best solution
Beer dishes need to be sunken so that the rim is at ground level. The dish should be a least the depth of a pint size plastic container. That way the slugs slither in but can't slither out. There are effective covered beer traps that sit on the ground. We started using covered traps after the drunken field mouse incident.

We have noticed that with each additional year of our almost organic gardening the slug problem has diminished and the earthworm population is expanding.
