2. Not for light thats for sure
Gilding, Electroplating coins and such.

They recreated it just now on Mythbusters, they made a series of 10 or so ceramic silver and copper batteries using vinegar, and wired them up to a replica "arc of the covenant" they were able to get 10,000 volts, even though it was very low amps. It shocked the hell out of them, the theory was that the electricity was used as part of a religious ceremony.
In as much as the "wrath of God" would certainly be felt, if you touched metal that was wired up to these batteries.

The screwball claims that you could make a lamp with these was what discredited alot of people who came up with reasons for egyptian batteries.
