make me think it's less a genuine roast, in the old Dean Martin method, and more of a chance for people to say insulting things but in really uncreative, drunk, and assholish ways. The idea of the roast is to lovingly poke fun at the person, not just be unfunnily vindictive, uncreative, and assholish.

And I have not yet seen a clip that makes me think that anyone, except maybe Sulu, will actually be funnily and friend-ily insulting.

All that I've seen is just crude, unrefined, and totally exemplary of the state of creativity and the arts in this country - Republican: meaning, unintellectual, lacking in subtlty, lacking in nuance, lacking in creativity, mean, nasty, rude, in-your-face, and totally unfunny.

And I find it so sad, because Shatner is such an incredible person, incredible actor, with an acting career spanning decades, and is perhaps the greatest living American(/Canadian) Hollywood icon. A guy like him deserves a GOOD roast, a CREATIVE roast, a roast of love within the friendly barbs and jibes.
