In 1999, Jazz journalist and fan Ashley Kahn, who has spent his career drudging up those of numerous jazz greats, took the amazing opportunity to chronicle the recording of jazz's epic album. Kahn interviewed countless musicians, engineers, and producers throughout the ages, as well as those remaining from the KOB sessions, and, most astonishingly of all, received access to the prestigious master tapes of the two sessions that redefined jazz--until the next time Miles decided to shake up the world, that is.

Kahn's recounting of Miles's history, his meticulous transcription of the tapes, his explanation of the numerous starts and stops on these tapes and the amusing studio chatter among the musicians that was recorded, all give the album a whole new sheen. He describes the recording industry of '59 perfectly and captures the six musicians' personalities almost dead-on, in addition to some excellent insights on the magic of KOB and its profound influence on the world.

Highly recommended for any jazz fan.
