7. At college in the late 80's, I went to see a New Age band.
.
Not my usual cup o' tea, but heck... it was free and I was bored.
.
It was a pretty good 8-pc band with some unusual instrumentation.
Sadly, I don't remember their name.
.
They had a young Romanian violinist, dark-haired and devastatingly
handsome -- the epitome of a Gypsy violinist, dressed all in colorful
silks.
.
At one point, the rest of the band went offstage to give him an
opportunity for a solo performance. He told the crowd that it was
an audience participation number and "here's what I'd like you to
do -- close your eyes."
.
He did a piece called "Butterflies" that took me away BEAUTIFULLY --
it was one of the most stunning performances I had (or have) ever
witnessed. Yet, when that last note faded away, there was a very
VERY long horrifyingly dead silence.
.
My thought was, "HOW THE FUCK DID EVERYBODY MISS THAT?
.
.
Not to worry. The entire crowd had been ABSOLUTELY mesmerized --
and it took forever for them to sit back down and stop rattling
windows half-a-mile away with their reaction.
.
"Close your eyes", INDEED.
.
