BP axes staff as it prunes green plans

BP is axing jobs in its alternative energy division as it trims back its green empire.

Employees drawing up strategy and working on wind power developments have been shown the door after the firm decided returns in Britain are unattractive.

Green budgets across BP's global operations could also come under scrutiny as the firm grapples with tumbling energy prices. The firm declined to comment.

BP controversially adopted the brand 'Beyond Petroleum' under previous chief Lord Browne. It has continued with aggressive marketing of its green activities under his successor, Hayward, despite a decision to invest in environmentally destructive oil sands.
