Happy Birthday Hugh! »

By Elizabeth Benjamin

A veteran of the Carey administration wrote in to note that today is the 51st governor's 89th birthday, adding: "I'm sure he will be pleased to know we have not forgotten."

So, here's a shout-out to Hugh Carey, a former congressman who was elected in a landslide in 1974 - the first Democratic governor in 16 years - and served two full terms as governor.

Carey is perhaps better remembered for his unorthodox actions (his offer to drink a glass of PCBs to underscore the fact that he believed they weren't a health risk, his unusual and abrupt choice of hair color (red), and his second marriage to Chicago real estate tycoon Evangeline Gouletas, who said she was a widow but turned out to be a three-time divorcee) than his serious accomplishments.
