On college campuses where the most dangerous weapons allowed are pocket knives and pepper spray, concealed firearms soon could be legal.

For the 2011 legislative session, state Sen. Greg Evers, R-moran-Crestview, filed a wide-ranging bill that would loosen many of the state’s restrictions on when, where and how people can carry guns, including allowing firearms on college and university campuses.

The legislation, which has won favor among gun rights activists and hunting enthusiasts, is eyed warily by many local higher education officials, and with outright concern by the people responsible for campus safety.

As far as justifying having students, faculty and staff carry guns on campus and in the classroom, it’s a nightmarish managerial problem,” said Tom Minick, director of security at Ave Maria University in Collier County. “It’s one of those things where, obviously, there is emotion and concern; but traditionally, inherently, college campuses are a very safe place.”

Why do republics hate higher education and public safety?
