2 face charges in fatal shooting

PEEKSKILL — As two men arrested in the shooting death of a 20-year-old mother were arraigned yesterday, friends and relatives of the slain woman, Danielle Male, kept a roadside vigil on Park Street, where she was shot early Tuesday.

"Danielle was such a strong person that we all thought she'd pull through this," said Ranisha Dechico, 27, sister of Brian Ellis, the father of Male's 3-year-old son. "She was someone who always made everyone laugh."

But there was no laughter yesterday on Park Street, or in Peekskill City Court, where Ronald K. Hatfield of Peekskill, 20, was arraigned on felony charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. An alleged accomplice, Jason A. Curry of Shrub Oak, 26, was arraigned on the same weapon charge and a felony count of first-degree hindering prosecution. Both were sent to the Westchester County jail without bail.

Detective Sgt. Mark O'Buck said Hatfield and Curry had a minor dispute with Ellis which culminated in the shooting. Ellis was in the green Honda that Male was driving on Park Street around 12:30 a.m. when shots were fired at the car, police said.
